No SMS Code or Bank App Approval at the Portugal Car Rental Desk?

Many banks ask cardholders to confirm some card payments with a one-time SMS code or an approval in the banking app. If your bank treats the deposit hold that way, a code sent to a phone number that doesn't work abroad, or an app you can't log in to, can leave the hold declined even though the card and the available limit are fine. Whether your bank asks for it, and for which transactions, is decided by the bank and the card, not by this site or the rental company.

This site doesn't track company by company whether a desk's terminal triggers such a prompt, and the companies' own terms generally don't say, so there is no table to give you. What it does track is the rule underneath: per terms verified July 2026, Goldcar, Centauro and Record go accept a physical debit card for the deposit, Cael, Guerin, Europcar and OK Mobility require a physical credit card, and Sixt depends on the booking. In every case the card must be physical and in the main driver's name. A confirmation code you can't receive is a practical risk on top of that rule, not a separate one.

Which companies actually work

  • Which phone number your bank would send a code to, and whether that SIM or an eSIM will actually receive texts in Portugal (roaming switched on, or a local plan).
  • Whether your bank's app is installed, logged in and updated on the phone you'll carry, and whether you know its password or biometric login.
  • Whether your bank can send a code by SMS if the app fails, or only through the app. Banks differ, so check with yours.
  • That the card is enabled for international use and for card-not-present or chip transactions abroad in your bank's settings.
  • The rental company's terms, linked from this site's comparison table, for card requirements, noted with the date you checked.
  • A second physical card in the main driver's name, from a different bank if possible, as a backup.

Step by step

  1. A few weeks before you fly, open your bank's app and note which phone number and which confirmation method it uses for card payments.
  2. If you'll rely on roaming, switch it on and test it, or arrange a local eSIM, and make sure the bank has the number you'll actually have with you.
  3. Tell your bank your travel dates and ask what confirmation it may ask for on a deposit hold at a rental desk, and how to complete it abroad.
  4. Pack a backup physical card in the main driver's name, and remember that Cael, Guerin, Europcar and OK Mobility need a credit card, not just any card.
  5. If the code doesn't arrive at the desk, don't keep retrying: repeated declined attempts can trigger a security block. Phone your bank's international line, ask for any refusal in writing, and contact the rental company before cancelling, as cancelling at the counter can be treated as a no-show.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Portugal rental desk ask for an SMS code from my bank?

It depends on your bank and card rather than on the rental company. Some banks ask you to approve certain payments by SMS code or in their app, and this site can't confirm which desks or terminals trigger one. Check with your bank before you travel.

What if my SMS code doesn't arrive in Portugal?

A code sent to a number that doesn't receive texts abroad may never reach you. Ask your bank for an app-based option, enable roaming or use a local eSIM, and phone the bank's international line from the desk if needed. Avoid repeated attempts, which can lead to a block.

Is this the same as my bank blocking the deposit as fraud?

They are related but not identical. A fraud block is the bank declining the transaction; a missing code is a confirmation step you can't complete. Both end in a declined hold, and this site's page on bank fraud blocks covers the other case.

Does needing an SMS code change which companies accept my card?

No. Per terms verified July 2026, Goldcar, Centauro and Record go accept a physical debit card for the deposit, Cael, Guerin, Europcar and OK Mobility require a physical credit card, and Sixt depends on the booking. The confirmation step comes on top of those rules.

Can a virtual card or phone wallet get around the code problem?

Not reliably. Virtual cards and phone wallets are consistently refused for the deposit, because the companies ask for a physical card in the main driver's name.
