Flat or Non-Embossed Credit Card for a Portugal Car Rental Deposit?
Many newer credit cards no longer have raised (embossed) numbers: the digits are printed flat, or the number is left off the front altogether and shown only in the bank's app. Visa and Mastercard terminals read the chip or contactless data, so the card still works for payments. Whether a given rental desk accepts it for the deposit is a separate question, and it is set by the rental company's own terms and by how the individual counter operates, not by the card network.
Some rental suppliers state that they want a card with embossed numbers; others say nothing. This site doesn't track embossing policy company by company, so treat the terms as the source to rely on. What it does track is the more important rule underneath: a physical card in the main driver's name. Per terms verified July 2026, Goldcar, Centauro and Record go accept a physical debit card for the deposit, Cael, Guerin, Europcar and OK Mobility require a physical credit card, and Sixt depends on the booking. A flat card is still a physical card; a number that exists only in an app is not.
Which companies actually work
- Look at your card: if you can feel raised digits with a fingertip, it is embossed; if the number is printed flat or absent from the front, assume the desk may ask about it.
- The cardholder's name must match the main driver, and the card must be physical and carried with you. A virtual card number or a phone wallet is not a flat card, and consistently won't be accepted for the deposit.
- The rental company's terms, linked from this site's comparison table: search for "embossed", "raised" or "card requirements" and note what they say, with the date you checked.
- A second card as a backup, ideally an embossed credit card in the same driver's name, since a refusal at the counter is hard to fix on the spot.
- The card's expiry date and available limit, which matter for the deposit hold regardless of embossing.
Step by step
- Check whether your card is embossed. If it is, this page doesn't change anything for you.
- If it is flat or has no number on the front, open the terms of your chosen company and look for any wording on embossing or card type. If there is none, that is not a guarantee either way.
- Email the company with your booking reference and ask in writing whether a flat, non-embossed credit card in the main driver's name is accepted for the deposit. Save the reply.
- If the reply is no or unclear, bring an embossed card as backup, or ask your bank whether it can issue a card with embossing; processing times vary.
- At the desk, present the physical card with the licence and passport. If it is refused, ask for the reason in writing and contact the company before cancelling, since cancelling at the counter can be treated as a no-show.
Frequently asked questions
Is a non-embossed credit card accepted for a car rental deposit in Portugal?
It depends on the rental company's terms and on the individual desk. Terminals read the chip or contactless data, so the card works technically, but some suppliers state a preference for embossed cards. Check the terms and ask in writing before you travel.
Is a flat card the same as a virtual card?
No. A flat card is a physical card without raised digits. A virtual card exists only as a number in an app. Virtual cards and phone wallets are consistently refused for the deposit, while a physical flat card is judged under the company's own terms.
Does a flat card change whether I need a credit card or a debit card?
No. Per terms verified July 2026, Goldcar, Centauro and Record go accept a physical debit card for the deposit, while Cael, Guerin, Europcar and OK Mobility require a physical credit card and Sixt depends on the booking. Embossing is a separate point.
What if the desk refuses my flat card?
Ask whether another physical card in the main driver's name can cover the deposit, and ask for the refusal in writing. Don't cancel at the counter before contacting the company, as that can count as a no-show.
Can I ask my bank for an embossed card?
Some banks offer card designs with embossing, others don't, and timing varies. Ask your bank well before you travel rather than relying on a replacement arriving in time.
