Klarna or Buy Now, Pay Later for a Portugal Car Rental: What It Doesn't Change

A growing number of car-hire booking sites let you split the rental charge into instalments through Klarna or a similar buy-now-pay-later plan instead of paying the full amount upfront. It's a genuine, useful option for spreading the cost of the booking itself — and it's easy to assume, wrongly, that a payment plan covering the rental charge also covers the security deposit the Portugal counter asks for at pickup.

It doesn't. A buy-now-pay-later plan is arranged between you and the booking site (or its payment partner) for the rental fee; the deposit is a separate pre-authorisation the rental company holds against a physical card at the counter, and that requirement is set by whichever of the eight companies compared on this site actually fulfils your reservation — Goldcar, Centauro, Record go, Sixt, Cael, Guerin, Europcar or OK Mobility. Splitting the rental fee into instalments doesn't change which of those companies needs a credit card versus a debit card, or whether it needs two.

Which companies actually work

  • Buy-now-pay-later financing (Klarna or similar) covers the rental charge itself — it isn't a card the counter can hold a deposit against, and it isn't mentioned in any of the eight companies' deposit terms tracked on this site.
  • The deposit rule doesn't move: Goldcar, Centauro and Record go still accept a physical, nominative debit card for the deposit per terms verified August 2026; Europcar, Guerin, Cael and OK Mobility still require a physical credit card; Sixt depends on your specific booking.
  • You still need to bring the physical card that satisfies your assigned company's deposit rule at pickup, regardless of how — or over how many instalments — you paid the rental charge itself.
  • A buy-now-pay-later plan is a separate agreement with the payment provider (repayment schedule, any interest after a promotional period, late-payment terms) that keeps running even if the rental itself falls through at the counter for a card-related reason.
  • If the counter refuses your card, cancelling the reservation doesn't automatically cancel or refund an active instalment plan — check the buy-now-pay-later provider's own cancellation terms separately from the rental company's.

Step by step

  1. Before choosing Klarna or a buy-now-pay-later option at checkout, find out which of the eight companies compared on this site will actually fulfil your booking, and check its debit-or-credit deposit rule.
  2. If that company accepts a debit card (Goldcar, Centauro, Record go), make sure that same physical card is free to use as security at pickup, whatever payment method you used for the rental charge.
  3. If it requires a credit card (Europcar, Guerin, Cael, OK Mobility), confirm you're bringing a separate physical credit card for the deposit — a buy-now-pay-later plan is not a substitute and won't be accepted at the counter.
  4. Read the buy-now-pay-later provider's own terms on what happens if the underlying booking is cancelled or refused — instalment schedules and rental-company refund rules are handled by two different parties and don't automatically sync up.
  5. If your card is refused at the counter, follow the same rescue steps as anywhere else on this site: cancel the reservation in writing the same day, then deal with the instalment plan and any chargeback separately with each provider.

Frequently asked questions

Does paying with Klarna or another buy-now-pay-later plan remove the credit-card deposit requirement in Portugal?
