Do You Need a Credit Card to Rent a Car in Portugal?
At most companies, yes — not for the payment, but for the security deposit taken at the counter when you pick up the car. A debit card almost always pays for the booking online; the credit-card requirement only shows up when you arrive to collect the keys.
There are exceptions. As of August 2026, Goldcar, Centauro and Record go officially accept a physical, nominative debit card for the deposit as well as the payment. Europcar, Guerin, Cael and OK Mobility still require a physical credit card, whatever cover or package you buy.
Which companies actually work
- Credit card required for the deposit: Europcar, Guerin, Cael, OK Mobility — no debit-card workaround exists.
- Debit card accepted for the deposit: Goldcar, Centauro, Record go — confirm your specific booking in writing.
- It depends on your booking: Sixt — the Portuguese terms say credit card, the international FAQ says debit is fine; only your reservation's payment section decides.
- Deposits typically run €1,200–1,900 for an economy car and are refunded 10–20 days after return.
- A deposit-waiver cover bought online (e.g. Super Relax, Smart Cover) can drop the deposit to €0, but at credit-card-only companies it never removes the card requirement itself.
Step by step
- Check whether your chosen company is on the debit-friendly list before you pay for the booking, not after.
- If it isn't, either switch to Goldcar, Centauro or Record go, or make sure a credit card in the main driver's name will be at the counter.
- Email the company with your booking number and ask for written confirmation of which card the deposit needs.
- If a deposit-waiver cover is available, buy it online during booking — it's cheaper than at the desk and reduces (or removes) the amount blocked.
- Print the written confirmation and your return flight ticket, and bring both to the counter.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a rental company need a credit card if I already paid?
The payment covers the rental price. The credit card is a separate security deposit against damage, fuel and tolls — companies prefer credit cards because the funds can be blocked (and later captured) more reliably than on a debit account.
Can I use someone else's credit card for the deposit?
No. Every company checks that the card's printed name matches the main driver on the rental agreement.
Does buying full insurance remove the credit-card requirement?
Usually not. At Cael, for example, the €0-excess SCDW cover still requires a physical credit card for the deposit — insurance reduces what you'd owe for damage, it doesn't change which card the desk accepts.
