Does Online Check-In Charge Your Car Rental Deposit Before You Arrive in Portugal?
Every other guide on this site describes the security deposit as something that happens at the counter, when you hand over the keys. That's true for most of the eight companies compared here, but not for all of them once online check-in is involved. Europcar's own published deposit policy states that if you complete online check-in, the deposit can be blocked on your card up to 48 hours before your scheduled pickup time โ not at pickup itself. Sixt's and Goldcar's own help pages describe the opposite: the authorisation is processed when you collect the car, and their online check-in step only verifies your documents, not your card.
The difference matters because it changes when you'd actually find out about a card problem. At a company that blocks early, a declined pre-authorisation can surface while you're still at home with days to call your bank or switch cards โ arguably a genuine advantage over discovering it for the first time at the counter. But it also means the card you used for online check-in needs to be live and able to take a large hold days before you fly, not just on the day itself, and a card you cancel, replace or max out in between could cause a decline that has nothing to do with anything at the airport.
Which companies actually work
- Europcar's own deposit policy page states the deposit block can happen up to 48 hours before pickup if you complete online check-in, rather than waiting until you're at the counter โ checked August 2026.
- Sixt's and Goldcar's own help pages describe deposit authorisation as happening at pickup regardless of online check-in; for those two, the online step verifies your documents, not your card.
- This site hasn't confirmed a published early-authorisation policy, positive or negative, for Centauro, Record go, Cael, Guerin or OK Mobility โ Centauro's separate SmartKey automated-pickup service requires full payment at least 24 hours ahead, but that's a different service from a standard online check-in and isn't confirmed to work the same way as Europcar's deposit timing.
- An early block doesn't change the deposit amount or which card type is accepted โ it only moves forward when the same hold covered elsewhere on this site actually lands on your card.
- If your online check-in confirmation mentions a pre-authorisation or a card check, don't assume that's just a formality โ treat it as the real deposit attempt and check your account, not only your inbox, before you fly.
Step by step
- Before completing online check-in, confirm with your specific company in writing whether the deposit is authorised then or only at pickup โ don't assume either behaviour from this page alone.
- If you're renting with Europcar, do online check-in early enough that a decline in the 48 hours before pickup still leaves you time to call your bank or bring a second card, rather than finishing it the night before you fly.
- Make sure the card you use for online check-in is the same physical card, in the main driver's name, that you'll bring to the counter โ an early block on one card doesn't help if you show up with a different one.
- Keep the deposit amount available on that card from the moment you complete online check-in, not just on pickup day, since an early block ties up the funds or credit limit for the whole gap in between.
- Screenshot or save any check-in confirmation that mentions a card authorisation, the same way this site recommends photographing the pre-authorisation receipt at the counter โ it's your only record of when the hold actually started.
Frequently asked questions
Does online check-in change how much deposit I pay in Portugal?
No. It can change when the hold is placed โ Europcar's own policy allows up to 48 hours before pickup โ but the amount and which card types are accepted are set by the same rules covered elsewhere on this site, not by the check-in step.
My card was declined right after online check-in โ does that mean I've lost the booking?
Not necessarily, and it's better news than a decline at the counter: you likely still have time before pickup to contact your bank about a fraud block or limit, or to arrange a card that will work, rather than resolving it standing at the desk.
If I don't do online check-in, can the deposit still be taken early?
Based on the published policies this site has checked, no โ the early-block behaviour is tied specifically to completing online check-in at the companies that offer it. Skipping online check-in and going straight to the counter means the deposit follows the at-pickup timing this site's other guides describe.
