Car Rental Deposit in Portugal: Always Choose Euros, Not Your Home Currency

When the card terminal at a Portuguese rental desk asks which currency to charge the deposit in, choosing anything other than euros triggers dynamic currency conversion (DCC) — the merchant's own payment provider converts the amount instead of your card network, at an exchange rate the terminal sets rather than the daily Visa or Mastercard rate. On a €1,200–1,900 deposit, that markup is real money, even though the hold itself is usually released afterwards.

This is a payment-terminal choice, not something tied to which company you rent from or which card you're using. Which companies actually work

When the terminal displays a currency choice, select euros (EUR) — never the option showing your home currency, however convenient it looks on screen.
The choice matters every time a card is charged at the counter, not just once: the rental payment itself, the deposit hold, and any later capture for damage, fuel or tolls can each separately offer a currency choice.
Your own card issuer's network exchange rate (Visa or Mastercard) is set daily and is almost always better than the rate a rental desk's terminal applies under dynamic currency conversion.
A staff member offering to charge "in your own currency for convenience" is offering DCC, whether or not they use that term — treat the offer the same way regardless of the wording used.

At the counter, before the deposit hold is authorised, ask explicitly to be charged in euros if the terminal or staff member hasn't already asked which currency you want.

Check your bank or card statement afterwards for the currency the hold and any later capture were actually processed in — a home-currency entry means dynamic currency conversion applied, even if you thought you'd declined it.
