Does Your Credit Card Need to Stay Valid After Your Portugal Rental Return?
The deposit block covered elsewhere on this site isn't an instant, one-off charge — it's a hold that sits against your card for a while, and this site's own pages on deposit amounts and refund timing already note a 10–20 day release window after you return the car. What isn't covered anywhere else on this site is a narrower, easy-to-miss requirement: at least two of the companies compared here state in their own terms that the card itself has to remain valid, unexpired, for a period after your return date — not just on the day you pick the car up.
Sixt's published Portugal rental terms state that the credit card used must be valid for a minimum period of one month after the scheduled end date of the rental and must be presented at collection. Guerin's own client-support FAQ states a near-identical rule: it only accepts a physical credit card, in the rental contract holder's name, valid for at least one month after the end of the contract, for excess and/or security-deposit purposes — both per terms verified July 2026. Neither this page nor any other on this site claims the other six tracked companies (Goldcar, Centauro, Record go, Europcar, Cael, OK Mobility) publish an equivalent clause one way or the other — get it in writing from your own company if your card's expiry date falls anywhere near your return date.
Which companies actually work
- Sixt's own Portugal terms require the deposit card to stay valid for at least one month after the scheduled end date of the rental, per terms verified July 2026.
- Guerin's client-support FAQ states the same one-month-after-contract-end validity rule for the physical credit card it takes for the excess and/or security deposit, per terms verified July 2026.
- This site hasn't found a published validity clause, positive or negative, for the other six companies it tracks — Goldcar, Centauro, Record go, Europcar, Cael and OK Mobility — so don't assume either way; ask in writing before booking.
- This is a different mechanism from the 10–20 day deposit-release window covered elsewhere on this site: even a company that releases its own hold quickly still needs your card's account to be live and unexpired for your bank to post that release.
- The debit-friendly shortlist (Goldcar, Centauro, Record go accepting a debit card for the deposit) doesn't make this question go away — a debit card has an expiry date too, so check it the same way whichever card type you're using.
Step by step
- Check your deposit card's printed expiry date against your scheduled return date, not your pickup date — a card that's fine on day one of the rental can still be too close to expiry by the time you drop the car off.
- If your card expires within roughly a month of your return date, contact your rental company in writing before booking and ask whether Portugal-specific terms apply to your card — Sixt and Guerin publish an explicit rule; the others don't, so get a direct answer rather than assuming.
- If your bank can reissue a replacement card with a later expiry date before you travel, do that instead of risking a refusal at the counter.
- Keep your rental agreement and any written confirmation on hand until the deposit hold is fully released, in case your bank asks why a hold sits against a card that's since expired or been reissued.
- If the card does expire before the hold clears, contact your bank directly rather than the rental company — it's usually the underlying card account, not the physical plastic, that has to stay live for the release to post.
Frequently asked questions
Does my credit card need to stay valid after I return the rental car in Portugal?
At two of the companies this site tracks, yes, per their own published terms: Sixt requires the card to be valid for a minimum of one month after the scheduled end date of the rental, and Guerin's FAQ states the same one-month-after-contract-end rule for its excess/deposit card, both per terms verified July 2026. The other six companies tracked here don't publish an equivalent clause either way, so ask your own company in writing before booking if you're not sure.
What happens if my card expires while the deposit hold is still pending?
It's usually the account behind the card, not the physical plastic, that your bank needs to post the release — a like-for-like reissued card under the same account number typically keeps the hold traceable. This varies by card issuer, though, so if your card is due to expire before the 10–20 day post-return release window covered elsewhere on this site closes, it's worth checking with your bank directly rather than assuming it'll sort itself out.
Does paying with a debit card instead of a credit card avoid this problem?
Not necessarily — this site hasn't found a published expiry-validity clause for the debit-friendly companies (Goldcar, Centauro, Record go) one way or the other, and a debit card can be just as close to its own expiry date as a credit card. Check your card's expiry against your return date regardless of which card type or company you're using.
Is this rule specific to Portugal, or does it apply everywhere these companies operate?
This site found the clause in Sixt's and Guerin's own Portugal rental terms specifically; whether the same wording appears in their terms for other countries isn't something this site tracks. For a Portugal booking, the practical takeaway is the same either way: check your card's expiry date against your return date before you rely on it for the deposit.
