Apple Pay or Google Pay for a Portugal Car Rental: Not a Deposit Card

Paying with a phone is second nature, so it's natural to assume Apple Pay or Google Pay will do at a Portuguese rental desk too. For the security deposit, it generally won't: on the terms this site verified in July 2026, all eight companies compared here — Goldcar, Centauro, Record go, Sixt, Cael, Guerin, Europcar and OK Mobility — expect a physical card in the main driver's name at the counter, and a virtual card number or phone wallet on its own isn't what they hold the deposit against.

Check that the card you plan to use is a physical card issued in your own name, and that it is the same card you'll show along with your driving licence and passport.
If your card is digital-only, order the physical version now, or bring a different bank-issued physical card as the deposit card.
