Goldcar Lisbon Airport 2026: debit card, deposit & pitfalls

Goldcar is the best-scoring big rental company for debit-card users in Portugal — its FAQ and the Portuguese contract terms accept a debit card in the holder's name for both payment and deposit. There is one big catch, so read on before you book.

Deposit in detail

The deposit is actually charged to your card (not just held) and refunded within 15 days — usually under 10. With the Super Relax cover both the deposit and the excess disappear entirely; side deposits of €150 (tolls) and €50 (fuel) can still apply. Premium categories X, P, U, L and W require two physical credit cards in Portugal, whatever cover you buy.

Watch out for

• The Lisbon Airport branch page (updated 05/2026) contradicts the national terms and claims debit, prepaid and Electron cards are not accepted. Until Goldcar fixes the discrepancy, get written confirmation for your specific booking: ptcustomerservice@goldcar.com, +351 222 076 408 (Mon–Fri 9–17).
• Buy Super Relax online during booking — it is cheaper than at the counter and removes both deposit and excess.
• Stay in economy groups: premium groups need two physical credit cards regardless of covers.

Cancellation & no-show

If your payment method is refused at the counter despite written confirmation, don't walk away silently — cancel in writing the same day, keep the proof, and start a chargeback (the 120-day window runs from the planned rental date).
