Centauro officially accepts a nominative Visa or Mastercard debit card for payment and deposit, making it the clearest debit-friendly choice in Portugal on paper. The deposit is steep, so the Smart Cover maths matters.

Deposit in detail

The deposit equals the excess for your group: A/A1/B/D €1,200 · C-series €1,400 · F-series €1,600 · G/S €1,800 · C2/S8–S10 €1,900. Smart Cover drops it to €0 — online prices for group A: €46 for 1 day, €29/day for 2 days, sliding to €26/day for 6–12 days, and €288 total for 13–29 days. Always on top: a €100 Via Verde toll deposit (refunded after ~20 days) and the transponder at €2.21/day (max €22.14/month). Groups C2 and S1–S10 require two credit cards — stay in A/B/D.

Watch out for

The card must be in the main driver's name; prepaid cards, Visa Electron, Maestro, Amex and Diners are rejected. Cash is accepted only with a credit card as guarantee — the terms say explicitly "credit card, NOT DEBIT".
A rubber clause appears twice in the terms: "You may be required to provide proof of a return travel ticket or pay a deposit on your credit card … regardless of the package." Carry printed return tickets.
Lisbon reviews report cover-pushing at the counter, card holds that "don't go through" and fuel tricks on full-to-full contracts. Buy Smart Cover online, refuse the counter upsell, and photograph the car and fuel gauge at pickup.

Cancellation & no-show

Cancel in writing and keep the confirmation. If the counter refuses your card despite the terms, cancel the same day by e-mail and dispute via chargeback (120 days from the planned rental date) or the Livro de Reclamações.
